The Business Department of Farmingdale High School consists of four teachers. The courses with the largest enrollments include: Street Law, Co-Op, Business Ownership and Marketing I, Business Ownership and Marketing II, Business Law. Three courses that have seen the largest increase in enrollment are: Fashion Merchandising, College Accounting, and Internship. To make room for new courses, older courses have been transitioned. Keyboarding is available to all 8th grade students (Middle School). BCA was a collaborative course with a Special Education teacher. It has been assigned solely to this teacher who is also certified in business education.

Interesting Projects
Community Breakfast for Advisory Board-DECA Officers plan, organize, and host this event. Business students, dressed in business attire, attend the breakfast and are seated according to their career interest.
1st Annual Leadership Speech Competition, the “Pringle’s Jingle” contest.
Designing Shopping Bags-which were used to decorate a showcase.
Annual Senior Citizens’ Prom-students host 200 seniors for an evening of dining and dancing.

CTE Endorsement in Accounting and Law—in order for Farmingdale students to obtain this certification, they must successfully complete an accounting course, law course, Introduction to Business, and two other business courses. Students are also required to complete NOCTI Accounting exam. In September 2007, Farmingdale offered two more CTE Endorsements in Marketing and Microsoft Office Expert.

Knowledge Matters Virtual Sports Project-using the Knowledge Matters software, marketing students set up their own football franchise and are responsible for making decisions involving personnel, pricing, promotion, maintenance, and player management.

Entrepreneurship Business—students in this course, through Junior Achievement, create and operate a business. Students in this course also have an opportunity to meet and collaborate with professionals from the community. During the spring of 2007, students made and sold smoothies after school. Their business name was Smooth Rhythms and it earned a profit.
Marketing and Management Advertising Project-teams of students collaborate with local businesses to create a complete advertising campaign. Students create newspaper, magazine, radio, television, and outdoor advertisements, as well as something extra, specific to their business. Students dress in professional attire and present their advertising campaign to the client. Businesses have utilized many of the students’ ideas and advertisements.

Finance 101/Essential Skills Class-through Junior Achievement and State Farm Insurance, students develop a resume, cover letter and reference page. They then submit their material with a completed job application. Two students will be called for an interview. The class watches the interviews and lists the pros and cons of each. The class also takes a field trip to State Farm.
Marketing-class worked with the Physical Education Department to put on South High’s first inaugural Dodgeball Tournament. Students develop, administer, and tally a survey to determine student/faculty interest. They also develop marketing research proposals with their recommendations for the tournament. Students then complete print, radio, and television advertisements for the event.

Sports and Entertainment and Marketing-students in this course worked with the Athletic Director and Track Coach to help organize the annual Track and Field Invitational Meet. Students handled many of aspects of the sporting event planning including tee shirt design and ordering, creation of programs, and promotional activities.
FBLA-runs the concession stand at all school functions during the year. This activity is treated as an entrepreneurship experience. Students are responsible for naming the business, establishing the menu, setting prices, determining marketing strategies and profit margins, and taking care of all financial aspects of the business.

They write a business plan utilizing the format similar to the one used in conjunction with the Small Business Administration (SBA) and Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The plan includes the following topics: A Statement of Purpose, Company Description, Product, Competition, Marketing Strategy, Location, and Management.
Accounting Project Fitness Junction-Fitness Junction is a merchandising business that sells exercise equipment. The business sells merchandise for cash and also subscribes to a national credit card service. In addition, some sales are made on account. Students utilize accounting concepts learned throughout the year. Source documents (checks, sales documents, receipts, cash register tapes, etc.) are posted to journals, payroll registers, employee earnings records, special journals general ledgers, and accounts receivable and accounts payable ledgers.

DECA-students completed 10 projects, one included: Dare to Believe a community service project that raised $2400 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by organizing and hosting a basketball game where the ESM Dream Team (teachers, administrations, local celebrities, and professional members) played against the Harlem Rockets. The second project included raising enough money to purchase a table at the annual MDA Black and Blue Ball.
Creative Marketing Spartan Branch Campaign-Marketing students developed and implemented ten marketing campaigns to promote The Spartan Branch (division of the ESM-NS Credit Union that is run by high school students). The favorite being For Real or No Deal: a campaign to promote financial literacy with teenagers that was enjoyable and very effective as it was delivered to most of the student body.

Once a month, in order to encourage continuing savings habits, high school students visit elementary and middle schools to collect deposits from students. Responsibilities include: collecting deposits, counting money, verifying bank information, and demonstrating appropriate customer service skills.
Business Ownership—the content of this course focuses on basic marketing functions as applicable to the completion of a project and a business plan. Major DECA projects are completed in this class.

Alumni Database-students enrolled in Microsoft Office and Web Design create a database of business alumni information and send a letter to them asking how to improve school classes, atmosphere, and the school in general. The survey also includes where students are in their life endeavors and what courses/majors helped them in high school to get where they are now. Students enrolled in this course also complete a similar database for recent graduates.
Time Management Project-students enrolled in Career Connections (CFM) complete a time management project. Students will become college freshmen, majoring in Business Management in this mock activity. Students are given a full college schedule (five classes), a full homework load, a doctor appointment, an oil change appointment, and a part-time job where they work 20 hours in that week. Using the above information, students must complete a week’s schedule (Sunday-Saturday) including eating three meals a day, sleeping at least eight hours per day, and showering daily. Students are to fill in days they have appointments and their school schedule, make time for all projects and homework, and prepare a presentation to explain how they completed the project.

DVD Project-students enrolled in the MicroComputer II class created this project that was shared with parents. The project dealt with every type of software, sharing of ideas, proofreading, copyright laws, and the use of digital cameras, scanners, printers and DVD burners.
