Adult Education and Workforce Development (AEWD)

  • Oversees adult basic education, English language acquisition, family literacy, workplace literacy, adult career and technical education, instructional components of apprenticeship programs, and workforce preparation programs.
  • Provides staff development and technical assistance to over 200 adult education agencies through the Regional Adult Education Network.
  • Supports the Commissioner of Education in his role as the co-chair of the Emerging Worker sub-committee of the State Workforce Investment Board.
  • Represents SED on the Economic Security Cabinet, a collaboration of state agencies that explores cooperative strategies that expand and improve programs to ensure the economic security of the State's neediest citizens.
  • Oversees the statewide administration for the GED examination in New York State.

Career and Technical Education (CTE)

  • Provides assistance in the implementation of curriculum and assists in school reform efforts.
  • Administers the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act grant.
  • Reviews applications for approval of CTE programs that allow students to earn a technical endorsement on their high school diplomas.
  • Provides monitoring, technical assistance and civil rights reviews so that secondary CTE programs in schools and BOCES offer high-level academic and technical skills, and ensures that these programs are available to all students in the state.
  • Provides monitoring and technical assistance to instructional technology initiatives related to Title IID of NCLB.
  • Provides assistance to schools seeking technology aid through the Federal E-Rate funding process.

New York State Summer Institutes (NYSSI)

  • Administers the eight component schools of the State Summer School of the Arts: Ballet, Choral Studies, Dance, Jazz Studies, Media Arts, Orchestral Studies, Theatre and Visual Arts. The schools offer intensive training, provided by nationally recognized artists and companies, to gifted high school students who represent the wide diversity of ethnic, social, cultural and economic backgrounds of all New Yorkers.
  • Provides statewide leadership and develops networks in the area of education for the gifted in order to build local capacity and align gifted education initiatives with state education standards.
  • Administers the Advanced Placement Fee Waiver program, which provides funds for low-income students to take College Board AP and International Baccalaureate exams.
  • Provides statewide leadership and develops ongoing networks and partnerships in the area of arts in education as it relates to all of the New York State Learning Standards.
