United States Senate Youth Program
The United States Senate Youth unanimously passed a resolution in 1962 creating the UNITED STATES SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM, a national initiative to provide a yearly opportunity for talented young people with demonstrated leadership abilities to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes and encourage them to consider careers in public service.

2009 Louis E. Yavner Awards Information
The Board of Regents invites nominations for the 2009 Louis E. Yavner Teaching and Citizen Awards. these awards provide recognition of a teacher and citizen who have made outstanding contributions to New York State Education about the Holocaust and other violations of human rights. The awards were established by thee Regents and funded by the late Regent Emeritus Louis E. Yavner. State Education Department staff are not eligible for these awards.

National Humanities Center Present Live, Online Professional Development Seminars for Teachers of U.S. History and American Literature
These online seminars are designed for high school teachers
but middle and elementary school teachers are welcome. Three
to four weeks before the seminar, participants will receive
the syllabus, which will require fifty to seventy-five pages
of reading. Each participant will be expected to complete
a Seminar-to-Classroom Guide on a syllabus text of his or
her choice and e-mail the completed Guide to the National
Humanities Center prior to the seminar. During the seminar
the Guides will serve as the focus of a discussion of instructional
content and strategies. The Great Migration; or Leaving My
Trouble in Dixie: July 7, 2009 Battle and Memory: The Civil
War in Art: July 8, 2009 . American Insurgents: American
Revolution From the People’s Perspective: July 9, 2009. For

LYC/P.A.T.C.H Summer Institute, Northport, NY (Long Island), June 29-July 3, 2009
The Law, Youth and Citizenship Program (LYC) of the New York
State Bar Association, and Project PATCH, Participatory Awareness
Through Community Help (the nationally recognized Law and
Civic Education Program of the Northport - East Northport
UFSD) will offer a 2009 Law and Civic Education Summer Institute.
The dates are June 29 - July 2, 2009. Sessions are 8:00 AM
- 4:00 PM at Northport High School. K-12 and Pre-service
teachers may apply. The registration fee is $30 per teacher
for the entire 30-hour program. All participants are eligible
for either in-service credit or a graduate credit option
through SUNY Stony Brook’s School of Professional Development.

Important Scoring Notice Affecting Social Studies Regents Examinations
In order to make the Regents level social studies scoring materials easier to use, the Rating Guides for the Regents examinations in Global History and Geography and United States History and Government have each been split into two volumes, beginning with the August 2008 administration.
Volume 1 for each examination contains the scoring key for Part I (multiple-choice questions) and Rating Guide for Part II (thematic essay). Volume 2 contains the Rating Guide for Part III A (scaffold questions) and Part III B (document-based essay question).

The NYSED Champlain/Hudson/Fulton Commemoration Online Resource
The Curriculum, Instruction and Instructional Technology Team has posted a Champlain/Hudson/Fulton Commemorations Online Resource at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/chf/chf.html to help local school districts celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Samuel de Champlain and Henry Hudson explorations, and the 200th anniversary of the launching of Robert Fulton’s steamboat, Clermont.
This online resource includes 10 standards-based, interdisciplinary elementary, middle and commencement level instructional modules, and 3 scholarly overviews that focus on the broad themes of encounter, trade and commerce. It also provides Strategies for Using the Champlain, Hudson, Fulton Online Resource that was designed to help local school districts infuse the modules into their local instructional programs.
Summer Reading Program - New York State History Reading Lists
To commemorate the New York State Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial, the New York State Library, as part of the 2009 Summer Reading Program, has created four selected reading lists that celebrate the history, culture, and diversity of New York State. Each of the four lists covers one reader age group: Picture Books; Elementary; Tween; and Teen and up. The reading lists can be found at http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/summer/readlist.htm.
