In 1942, the Roosevelt administration launched the Manhattan Project that would develop the technology to make it possible to build an atomic bomb. In just three years the Project achieved its goal. The War in Europe ended on May 8, 1945; the focus of the war was shifted to the Pacific. The U.S. launched an aggressive campaign against Japan’s industrial strength. President Harry S. Truman made the decision to use the bomb rather than launch a massive land invasion. On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima; a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki; causing Japan to surrender surrendered on September 2, 1945. The human and environmental impacts were horrific. The atomic bomb opened a new era in human history.
