Christianity began as a Jewish sect that became a blend of Greek and Jewish traditions and beliefs. Shortly after the death of Jesus of Nazareth, missionaries spread the Christianity throughout the Mediterranean world. The Apostles and early Christians believed in the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion, and his ascension into heaven. Under the influence of Paul of Tarsus, the Christian tradition evolved into a tradition that is quite distinct from Judaism. Like Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam, Christianity’s adherents came from urban centers. It appealed to the poor and oppressed inside the Roman Empire. Approximately, one third of the world’s populations are Christians.
