New York State Science Olympiad Competition 2008-2009

The State Education Department, in cooperation with the National Science Olympiad and the New York State Science Olympiad, invites your students to participate in a Statewide Science Olympiad competition. Teams of students from public and nonpublic middle schools, junior high schools, and high schools are eligible for participation in this event.  This New York State Science Olympiad will consist of academic, interscholastic competitions between teams. Registered teams would prepare during the year for scheduled regional, state and possible national competitions. Some events will follow the formats of popular board games, Olympic Games, and TV shows. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced among the various science disciplines of biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science content, concepts, processes, skills and applications. Competitive teams will be made up of students from grades 6-9 and from grades 9-12.

The tournaments are overseen by the National Science Olympiad, a national nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education to students and teachers. The National Science Olympiad accomplishes their goals through classroom activities, research, training workshops and these intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments.

The Council of State Science Supervisors (CS3), The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the National Science Educators Leadership Association (NSELA) endorse this competition. It should not be confused with other competitions, which bear similar titles.

The materials below include registration information required for participation. Please follow the enclosed procedures for registration carefully so that your team will be registered by the deadline. The registration deadline is December 31, 2008. All questions regarding the Science Olympiad registration should be directed to: Harold Miller (914) 328-4709. General questions on participation should be directed to Anthony Jaacks, Associate in Science Education, New York State Education Department at ajaacks@mail.nysed.gov.

Regional and State Science Olympiads

All regional tournaments for the Science Olympiad will be held during the months of February and March, 2009, at the sites listed in the “Division Sites” section below. The top teams from each regional tournament will be eligible to compete in the state tournament. The number of teams from each region that will be invited to participate in the state tournament will depend on the size of the regional tournament.

The registration fee for the Science Olympiad is $205.00 per team for the 2008-2009 school year. This fee entitles one team of 15 students from the registered school to participate in a regional tournament. Coaches will receive confirmation of registration, the regional site location and a copy of the Coach’s Manual within two weeks of receipt of the completed registration. (An incomplete, non-original or incorrect registration will be returned to the school without being processed. To be considered, it will have to be resubmitted by the school prior to the registration deadline.)

The deadline for receipt of registrations is December 31, 2008. Schools whose registrations are received after that date will be added on a space available basis. In the event a site is filled, late registering teams will be placed on a waiting list and will be able to participate only if another team cancels prior to February 1, 2009. Travel expenses for each level of competition are the responsibility of the participating school. Two coaches, who will be asked to assist with conducting one or more tournament events, must accompany each team.
