Revised 2009-10 Mathematics 3-8 Testing Schedule

At their June meeting, the Board of Regents made a policy decision to implement a new administration schedule for the Grades 3-8 EnglishLanguage Arts and Mathematics Tests to start in this upcoming school year. As a consequence, the 2009-10 Elementary- and Intermediate-level testing schedule has undergone several changes. The 2009-10 Elementary- and Intermediate-level testing schedule can be found at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/osa/sched.html.

For curriculum guidance for the Grades 3-8 Mathematics Testing Program, please go to http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/osa/elintmath.html. Please use this guidance to ensure that your local curriculum sequencing is aligned with the May administration of the Grades 3-8 Mathematics Tests.

Note: The first administration of the 3-8 Mathematics Tests in May 2010, and ONLY this administration, will include post March performance indicators of the previous year through April of the current year.

Geometry Test Sampler Now Available

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) identifies outstanding teachers in mathematics and science at the national level. In 2008, teachers of grades K-6 will be eligible for this award. New York State is looking for nominations for outstanding mathematics and science teachers who bring state and national standards to life in their classrooms, spark students’ imaginations, have a belief that all students can learn, engage students, and have an overall passion for teaching and learning. If you know of a teacher you feel qualifies for this prestigious honor, visit the Presidential Awards page and click on “Presidential Awards” to find out how to nominate them. Nominees must submit their applications by May 1, 2008 to be considered.

Excelsior Scholars Programs for Grade Seven Math and Science Students

The purpose of this program is for New York State public and independent colleges and universities to provide advanced coursework for high performing mathematics and science students who will have completed seventh grade in June 2008. The advanced coursework must be in mathematics and science and must be aligned to the New York State learning standards at the commencement-level. The program must include only eligible and other high performing students as defined in Section 100.14 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

The program should:

  • Enhance student knowledge and understanding of the mathematics and science needed to be competitive in the global economy.
  • Include hands-on, real world applications of mathematics and science.
  • Provide learning experiences focused on conceptual understandings, procedural fluency and problem solving.
  • Integrate 21st century technology into the learning experiences.
  • Result in measurable improvement in student academic achievement of the New York State learning standards as included in the core curricula for mathematics and the sciences at the commencement-level.
  • Provide for coordination with the six centers of excellence in technology and the programs offered by these centers, to the extent practicable. More information related to these centers can be found at

Institute of Education Sciences (IES)

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES)/What Works Clearinghouse publishes practice guides in education to bring the best available evidence and expertise to bear on the types of challenges that cannot currently be addressed by single interventions or programs. The What Works Clearinghouse was established in 2002 by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to provide educators, policymakers, researchers, and the public with a central and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education.

IES practice guides external link icon consist of a list of discrete recommendations for educators that are intended to be actionable, are written by panels of nationally recognized experts, and are subjected to rigorous external peer review and include such titles as Encouraging Girls in Math and Science, Organizing Instruction and Study to Improve Student Learning, and Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades.

Memo regarding the June 2008 Regents Examination in Integrated Algebra

The Regents Examination period for June 2008 will begin on Tuesday, June 17, and conclude with the Rating Day on Thursday, June 26. The Regents Examination in Integrated Algebra will be administered on the afternoon of June 17. In addition, all schools that administer the examination in June 2008 will be participating in the post-operational score collection for standard setting. The conversion chart for determining each student's final examination scale score from the total raw score will be posted on the Department's web site no later than the Rating Day, Thursday, June 26.

Regulatory Changes Related to Commencement Level Mathematics Requirements Approved

Regulatory Changes Related to Commencement Level Mathematics Requirements Approved at its May 22-23, 2006 meeting, the Board of Regents approved changes to section 100.5 (a)(3)(iv), 100.5 (a)(5)(b)(2), 100.5 (b)(iv)(c), 100.5 (b)(v)(a), and 100.5 (b)(x) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. The action clarifies policy changes for commencement level mathematics, including graduation requirements, units of credit, and types of diplomas, during and after the transition from Regents Examinations in Mathematics A and Mathematics B to Regents Examinations in Integrated Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and Trigonometry. These changes are effective June 15, 2006 and will primarily affect students who first enter grade 9 in September of 2007.
