New York State Essential Elements Schools - to - Watch Program

What is the NYS Essential Elements Schools to Watch Program (EE-STW)?

New York State is a member of the National Schools-to-Watch Program. This program, which was developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, recognizes schools that offer middle level programs that excel in the following four tenets; academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure. The program is non competitive and is designed to promote and highlight characteristics of high performing middle level programs. The program is a vehicle for school reform in as much as it is tenable for any school to apply if they are on a trajectory for improvement. New York State recognized that the four tenets closely aligned with the Department’s Seven Essential Elements of Standards-Focused Middle Level Schools. This was the impetus for the New York State Essential Elements Schools to Watch statewide recognition program. The State Education Department in partnership with the NY State Middle School Association, NY State United Teachers as well as other academic associations across the State have identified the following middle level programs as NYS Essential Elements: Schools to Watch.
