Middle Level Indicators of Achievement Checklists for the Non-Tested Content Areas |
In February 2005, the Board of Regents approved a three-model (Models A, B and C) strategy to implement the Regents Policy Statement on Middle Level Education. To support school districts and their schools with middle grades, regardless of which model they seek approval to implement, the Department has developed the Middle Level Indicators of Achievement Checklists. These checklists of knowledge and skills assess the strengths and limitations of programs in the non-tested areas, to facilitate student achievement of the New York State Learning Standards.
The Department recommends that administrators and instructional staff use the checklists to assess their instructional programs in the non-tested areas to determine strengths and alignment with the appropriate New York State Learning Standards. The checklists are excellent tools for districts to use in conjunction with developing their Model B or C proposals.
Section I contains the Introduction, which explains the purpose and use of the Middle Level Indicators of Achievement Checklists for the Non-Tested Content Areas, and has links to the Regents Policy Statement on Middle Level Education and the New York State Learning Standards.
Separate checklists for each non-tested area have been created with the help of New York State teachers, professional organization representatives and the Department’s content specialists. Each checklist assesses, at minimum, ten common program indicators. An Action Plan Template is included for developing and/or listing strategies to address identified gaps. Also included is a collection of resources with web links, where available, that administrators and teachers can view for information to assist them as they work to strengthen or enrich their programs. The document concludes with a brief Question and Answer section.
