LOTE Teacher Associations

AAS - Association for Asian Studies - AAS Is a professional association open to all persons interested in Asia. It seeks through publications, meetings, and seminars to facilitate contact and an exchange of information among scholars to increase their understanding of East, South, and Southeast Asia.

AATA - American Association of Teachers of Arabic AATA provides publications, programs, software, manuscripts and links in the Islamic language.  There is information of conferences, scholarships and grants.

AATF - American Association of Teachers of French - The AATF has many regional affiliations in New York State. They provide the annual student French examinations as well as many opportunities for professional development. Many resources are available at this site including an online bulletin board for sharing ideas, seeking help, and posting K-12 job openings.

AATG - American Association of Teachers of German - The mission of the AATG is to bring the language, literature and cultures of the German-speaking world to all Americans. They offer many professional development opportunities for teachers and students, scholarships and awards. Web-based resources, learning scenarios and web projects are also available.

AATI - American Association of Teachers of Italian - This national association also has regional affiliations. Conference opportunities, scholarship, study abroad, job postings are all available through this organization. Their newsletter offers many ideas for the classroom teacher as well as scholarly articles, job openings, and regional meetings.

AATK - American Association of Teachers of Korean - The AATK is for all levels of teachers of the Korean language, culture, and literature. They offer workshops and conferences, publish a journal, proceedings, and newsletters, and conduct research.  

AATSEEL - American Association of Teachers of Slavic and Eastern European Languages – AATSEEL advances the study and promotes the teaching of Slavic and East European languages, literatures, and cultures on all educational levels, elementary through graduate school. They hold conferences, grant awards, publish a journal and newsletters, and have teacher resources.

AATSP -  American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese - This organization serves more Spanish and Portuguese educators than any other organization in the world. They promote the study of Spanish and Portuguese languages, literatures, and cultures. Job opportunities and scholarship information is also provided. Regional affiliations make this organization very accessible.  The National Spanish examination is coordinated through this organization.

AATT - American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages – The association includes all languages of the Turks.  The site contains proficiency guidelines, language learning framework, teacher resources, publications, conference information, and book reviews.

ACTR - American Council of Teachers of Russian – ACTR offers academic, opportunities, publications, programs, conferences, the high school Olympiadas, the National Russian Essay Contest, and exchange programs.  

ALTA - African Languages Teachers AssociationALTA provides learning materials for beginning, intermediate and advanced study, and training on pedagogy, technology, and language programs. 

APA - American Philological Association – APA is for the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, and civilizations. They provide newsletters, awards, job listings, and conferences. 

ASLTA - American Sign Language Teachers Association – ASLTA is a national organization dedicated to the teaching of ASL and Deaf Studies at all levels of instruction.  It contains certification procedures and standards, job listings, workshops, and position papers.   

ATJ - Association of Teachers of Japanese ATJ offers classroom resources, information on study abroad programs, job listings, conferences, and newsletters.

CLA - Cantonese Language Association  

CLASS - Chinese Language Association for Secondary -Elementary - School -  CLASS offers teacher resource links, professional development opportunities, curriculum standards, and current programs.

CLTA - Chinese Language Teachers Association - CLTA offers teacher training programs of both a pre-service and in-service nature, awards and meetings.

IAT - International Association of Teachers of Czechs - IAT develops Czech teaching materials; meetings, holds conferences, seminars, and workshops, coordinates teaching programs, publishes a newsletter, and has teacher resources links.

NAACLT - North American Association for Celtic Language Teachers

NCJLT - National Council of Japanese Language Teachers – NCJLT deals with teaching Japanese in grades K-16, adminsters the Japanese National Honor Society for secondary students, publishes the Oshirase Newsletter, offers professional development, holds the 'Nengajou' contest, offers special awards, travel grants and recognition for teachers and learners of Japanese, such as a national teachers' award and a scholarship for students.

NCSTJ - National Council of Secondary Teachers of Japanese  – NCSTJ offers a newsletter (Oshirase), conferences, study, and job listings, a yearly nengajo (postcard) contest for students, and a national honor society for its members.

NORTANA - Norwegian Researchers and Teachers Association of North America  – NORTANA sponsors an essay competition celebrating Ibsen-året, has a list of existing Norwegian programs, newsletters and job listings.


LOTE Professional Organizations

ACTFL - American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages - This is one of the largest organizations of teachers of languages other than English in the United States. Members can participate in annual meetings that offer hundreds of different workshops on a variety of themes and addressing ALL levels of instruction; K-post-secondary, as well as take advantage of the many professional development opportunities that they offer.

 

NECTFL - Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages – NECTFL holds an annual conference, publishes journals, offers awards and scholarships, has job listings and teacher resource links.
 

NYSAFLT - New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers - NYSAFLT offers a direct link to its membership with all the current trends, mandates, and assessments. With both regional and annual meetings, newsletters and bulletins, the members have many opportunities to keep up-to-date and be a part of an action team of LOTE professionals.

FL Teach - Foreign Language Teaching Forum - This site is a listserv for teachers of languages other than English. The participants share ideas, ask grammatical, linguistic, cultural and pedagogical questions.

NAPH - National Association of Professors of Hebrew

NCLRC - National Capital Language Resource Center - This is a monthly publication that provides practical teaching strategies, shares insights from research, and announces professional development opportunities for ALL teachers of languages other than English.
