SLMS Administrator of the Year Awards

Beatrice E. Griggs Elementary Administrator Award
The Award recognizes an elementary or district administrator who has been responsible for initiation, maintenance, and/or the improvement of the School Library Media Program of an Elementary Library Media Program in a New York State school district during the past three to five years. The winner receives a plaque at the SLMS Spring Conference, acknowledging the support of the School Library Media Program.

SLMS Secondary Administrator's Award
The Award recognizes a Secondary or District Administrator who has effectively supported the maintenance and the improvement of a Secondary or District Library Media Program in a New York State School District during the past three to five years. The winner receives a plaque acknowledging the support of the School Library Media Program awarded at the SLMS Spring Conference.

Sara Jaffarian Award for Excellent K-8 Media Center Programs
The American Library Association announces the $4,000 Sara Jaffarian Award for an excellent humanities program in a K-8 school library or media center. The nominated humanities program can be focused on a wide variety of subjects and will be promoted as a model for other school libraries.

AASL awards open with more than $50,000 in opportunities

The American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) awards program is offering more than $50,000 in awards in 2010 to AASL members.
AASL, www.aasl.org, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), promotes the improvement and extension of library media services in elementary and secondary schools as a means of strengthening the total education program. It advocates for excellence, facilitates change, and helps develop leaders in the school library media field.

AASL's 10 awards recognize excellence and showcase promising practices in the school library media field in categories that include research, collaboration, leadership and innovation. Awards recognize a job well done, validate the work members do every day in their library, and acknowledge excellence in multiple areas of school librarianship. The 2010 applications can be viewed and downloaded at http://www.ala.org/aasl/awards.


We the People Bookshelf Award
School and Public Libraries may apply to the National Endowment for the Humanities to receive 16 classic hardcover books related to the theme of “A More Perfect Union.” The set includes sixteen books in English appropriate for reading levels from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Applicants may choose to receive some of these books in Spanish translation. Libraries will also receive supplementary materials for programming, including bookplates, bookmarks, and posters.
