Music Education Data

The Music Education Data chart contains statewide totals for public school student enrollments and teacher assignments in selected music courses. The data is from the Basic Education Data System (BEDS) annually reported by teachers and administrators across New York State. Music Education personnel in the State Education Department have received the yearly reports and compiled this chart to show trends in music enrollments and teaching assignments across the years. The current chart covers a time period of approximately thirty years from the 1975-76 school year until the 2006-07 school year.

Please note in the fall of 2001 some BEDS assignment codes were updated or eliminated based on the recommendations of a group of music educators from the New York State School Music Association. For example, courses with Junior High titles were changed to Middle/Jr. High School to be more reflective of Department priorities and educational trends. Elimination of some course titles, such as Individual Instruction, resulted in clearer reporting by music teachers and a fuller utilization of the Instrumental Lesson Group or Vocal Lesson Group categories.

Viewers may note some current trends:

More students are receiving music instruction in many music classes.
- Slight increases can be seen in Music Theory, Advanced Placement, Electronic Music, Elementary Band, Elementary Orchestra, Middle/Jr. High Orchestra, Senior High Orchestra, and Jazz Vocal Ensemble (Sr.).
- Significant increases are present in Elementary Orchestra, Lesson Groups and Senior High Jazz Band.
The total number of professionals teaching music is increasing. This trend parallels enrollment increases outlined above. Additionally, the total number of music teachers (see bottom of chart) has reached a record level for the time period.

The total numbers of music students and teachers in 2006-07 as compared to 1975-76 are significant since the total public student enrollment is smaller over the same time period.

In some areas fewer students are receiving music instruction in 2006-07 than in 2005-06.
- Slight decreases can be seen in Elementary Music, Middle/Jr. High Concert Band, Senior High Concert Band, and Studio-Art/MIOL.
- Continuing decreases appear in General Music Grades 7 & 8.

The total number of music students decreased in 2006-07 from the previous year, primarily in New York City.

The overall number of music administrators is relatively stable although at a significantly lower level than in 1975-76.
