New York State Learning Standards Review Initiative www.emsc.nysed.gov/standardsreview This website includes Information and updates on the SED review of all 28 New York State Learning Standards. In March 2008, the Board of Regents announced that it will review New York’s Learning Standards, beginning with the standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and English as a Second Language (ESL). The standards are critically important. They determine the curriculum content and State assessments, including grade 3-8 tests and the Regents Exams. The standards represent the core of what all students should know, understand and be able to demonstrate. Meeting the standards should ensure that students are prepared for college, work and citizenship. Current NYS learning standards and core curriculum are available at www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/cores.htm.
NYSED Virtual Learning System (VLS) www.nysvls.org The NYSED VLS presents the definitive set of New York State's learning standards, including the full text of the 28 standards and their respective key ideas and performance indicators, as well as the alternate performance indicators for students with severe disabilities. VLS offers lesson plans and tasks to support PreK-12 standards-based instruction, such as sample tasks and learning experiences. Other teaching resources from the State Library, Public Broadcasting Services, Archives, and Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) are also available.
Call for Expertise www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/call.htm The New York State Education Department has issued a “Call for Expertise” to solicit teacher/educator interest in ongoing, State-level consulting work in the areas of curriculum, assessment, and instructional technology. Upon completing the online survey, names are registered in a database, which SED staff will use to establish committees.
