Professional Organizations


The following is a list of state and national professional organizations associated with Bilingual Education.


NYSABE     New York State Association for Bilingual Education

NYSABE is a statewide organization of professional and advocacy members founded to address the educational needs of language-minority students, who are limited English proficient, and are participating in programs. NYSABE supports the belief that language pluralism and bilingual competence in English and other languages benefit the nation and all its citizens, and that bilingualism is a critical component of contemporary education in the United States.


NYSTESOL New York State Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages                                       http://www.nystesol.org/ 

An association of professionals concerned with the education of limited English proficient students at all levels of public and private education in New York State. Areas of interest include classroom practices, research, program and curriculum development, employment, funding and legislation.

Through research, professional development, public education and legislative advocacy, NABE pursues the implementation of educational policies and practices which ensure equity of education opportunity for linguistically and culturally diverse students and advance U.S. interests in an era of global interdependence and competition.


TESOL    Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

TESOL's mission is to develop the expertise of its members and others involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages to help them foster effective communication in diverse settings while respecting individual's language rights. To this end TESOL:

  • articulates and advances standards for professional preparation and employment, continuing education and student programs;
  • links groups worldwide to enhance communication among language specialists;
  • produces high-quality programs, services, and products;
  • promotes advocacy to further the profession.
