The administration of the New York State Grades 3-8 Testing Program for mathematics will begin in March 2006 and be administered every March thereafter. The New York State Education Department created this document to assist school districts in the curriculum planning process. Using this guide to develop local curriculum maps will help ensure preparation for these important mathematics assessments.
The document lists all the mathematics test-related content performance indicators by grade level and categorizes them as Pre-March or Post-March. The process strands are not presented in this way but are assumed to be integrated throughout all the concepts taught during the school year. Locally developed curriculum, instruction, and assessment must be designed with this in mind. Additionally all three of these components must address conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem solving. The chart below illustrates the interrelationship between these essential areas.
For example, all the Pre-March content performance indicators in grade 4 could be included on the grade 4 mathematics assessments. The Post-March content performance indicators in grade 4 could be tested on the grade 5 mathematics assessments. Through a careful analysis by the Education Department of the distribution of the content based on the performance indicators, it has been determined that there is a fair distribution of content performance indicators between the Pre-March and Post-March time periods. In contrast, all of the process performance indicators for a given grade level could be tested on that grade’s mathematics assessment.
School districts are encouraged to use this document when aligning local curricula and designing instruction for grades 3 through 8. To aid in the continuity needed for this local alignment activity, this guidance material will remain constant throughout the NYS Grades 3-8 Testing Program.
