Grade 5 Mathematics Test
March 6-17, 2006
The rulers for the Grade 5 Mathematics Test were printed correctly, but in a very small number the perforations were misaligned during manufacturing. Therefore, when some of the rulers are punched out, a small section may be missing.
In light of this, the Department is providing the following scoring clarification for Grade 5, Book 2, Question 34:
· In Part A, an acceptable range of measurement for each segment of the octagon will be between 2.5 and 3.5 cm. Therefore, the allowable response range for the perimeter of the octagon will be between 20.0 and 28.0 cm as long as it is based on the student’s measurement of each segment.
· In Part B, the allowable response range will be between 80.0 and 112.0 cm.
The Department is still reviewing the Grades 6, 7 and 8 Mathematics Tests to determine if a similar issue exists. All teachers involved in scoring these tests should check the Office of State Assessment website for the latest guidance at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/3-8/latest/update06.htm on Monday, March 27, before scoring begins.
Please remember that the grades 6, 7 and 8 mathematics tests are still secure and must not be discussed with the press or the public until the end of the makeup period, which concludes friday, March 24, 2006.
